Trump Eyeing Significant Reduction of US Troops in Afghanistan

President Trump is weighing significantly scaling back the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, according to media reports.

The U.S. currently has approximately 14,000 troops in Afghanistan, but the Trump administration is reportedly eyeing reducing that number, the Wall Street Journal and CNN reported.

Although sources said that Trump’s decision is not definite, some U.S. officials are worried that he will cut down the number of troops in Afghanistan and will do so in the near future, according to CNN.

U.S. troops in Afghanistan are primarily responsible for advising and training Afghan security forces as part of Operation Resolute Support Mission, which was first launched in 2015 after the NATO combat mission formally ended in 2014.

Trump signaled during an interview last month he was not thrilled that troops remained in Afghanistan, but he noted that experts had cautioned him against withdrawing troops from the region.
